Small Farms Often Rely on Principal Operator Labor, Large Farms Rely on Hired Labor

Overall, between 2014-18, U.S. farms used about 59% operator, spouse and family labor, compared to 41% paid labor. However, farms of different sizes relied on different mixes of labor.

Dealer Optimism Index Turns Positive in June Survey

According to the latest Dealer Sentiments & Business Conditions update, our Dealer Optimism Index, which measures sentiment among dealers compared to the prior month, turned positive after dropping in March. Sentiment rose to 9% in May (34% more optimistic, 41% in line and 25% less optimistic) from –40% in the previous month.

Dallas Fed 2Q20 Ag Survey Reports Weaker Ag Credit Conditions

Bankers responding to the second quarter survey reported overall weaker conditions across most regions of the Eleventh District. They noted that dry conditions are putting a strain on agricultural production despite some rainfall in late May.

European Dealer Sentiment Improves Slightly in June

Equipment Financing New Business Volume Drops 26% in May

The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s (ELFA) Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) showed overall new business volume for May was $6.7 billion, down 26% year-over-year from new business volume in May 2019. Volume was down 18% month-to-month from $8.2 billion in April.

Equipment Leasing & Finance Industry Confidence Improves in June

The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) has released the June 2020 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI). Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market increased to 45.8, up from the May index of 25.8.

Agricultural credit conditions in the Kansas City Fed’s Tenth District and the Chicago Fed’s Seventh District slipped in the first quarter of 2020, impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. As commodity prices drop, so has farm income, loan repayment rates and loan interest rates. At the same, farmland values have increased slightly or remained flat during the pandemic.
